The Tree Jobs Pagedale Owners Ask About

Pagedale covers about 1.2 square miles of north St. Louis County, and the 2020 census counted 2,554 residents and 1,384 housing units, of which 22.3 percent were vacant. Most of the city is single-family houses on modest lots, and many of the trees around them were planted or sprouted decades ago.

Requests tend to fall into three groups. The first is a single large tree that is dead, dying or cracked, often a silver maple or an elm close to the house. The second is a yard or lot that has filled in with brush and small trees, often on a property that sat empty for a while. The third is storm damage, when a limb comes down on a roof, a car or a fence. For that last group, our emergency and storm tree removal page lays out the first steps.

Tell the contractor what you need the result to be. Some owners only want a hazard gone. Others want a lot cleared so it can be mowed, sold or fenced. The scope, and the price, can be very different.

Local history

From Farm Fields to a 1950 City

Before it was a city, Pagedale was farmland, and the area had notable Greek and African American communities. Change came with transit. In the late 1800s, St. Vincent's mental hospital, just north of St. Charles Rock Road, led to a streetcar line that ran north through what is now Pagedale to meet an interurban line to St. Charles. The tracks made it possible to live here and work elsewhere.

South of Pagedale, near Page and Ferguson avenues, a community called Hazel Hill grew up and led to the Lincoln School, which later became part of the Normandy School District. Pagedale itself was incorporated on February 15, 1950. A subdivision called Engelholm Gardens followed in 1954 at Ferguson and North Market Street.

The city's population peaked at 5,106 in 1960 and has declined since, to 3,310 in 2010 and 2,554 in 2020. A $1 million City Hall and Police Facility opened in 2001.

In 2015, three residents backed by the Institute for Justice filed a class action complaint over non-traffic fines. In 2018 the city settled and agreed to stop earning money from ticketing residents for minor offenses. For property owners, the lesson is simple: if a dead tree or overgrown yard is drawing city attention, call City Hall, ask what is actually required and get the work quoted in writing.

Local conditions

Local Factors Behind Pagedale Tree Work

These facts about Pagedale's housing and setting shape the jobs that come up most.

Mid-century housing

The city incorporated in 1950 and peaked in population by 1960, so much of its housing, and many of its yard trees, date from that era. Trees from that time are now large and often overdue for pruning.

Vacant properties

About one in five housing units was vacant in 2020. Untended lots grow brush and volunteer trees that can crowd fences and the houses next door, so clearing work is a frequent request.

Native shade trees

St. Louis County's native forest is dominated by oak, maple and hickory, and residential streets are mostly planted with large native shade trees. Large species on small lots usually mean sectional removals.

State route frontage

Missouri Route 180 runs through Pagedale on St. Charles Rock Road and along the Wellston border. Trees in a state route right of way are handled by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Who handles what

City, State or Owner: Who Handles a Pagedale Tree?

A tree inside your property line is generally yours to maintain. A tree in the public strip by the street may be the city's, and the rules differ among St. Louis County municipalities. Pagedale City Hall can tell you which applies and whether any permit or notice is needed before a tree near the street comes down.

If the tree is beside St. Charles Rock Road or another part of Route 180, the Missouri Department of Transportation maintains that road, so questions about trees in the right of way go to MoDOT.

Lines are their own category. If a tree is touching a power line or a line has come down, stay clear and call Ameren Missouri. If a stump is near a buried utility, call 811 for the Missouri One Call System before any grinding.

Job explained

Removing a Dead Tree Near a Pagedale House

Dead trees break differently from live ones. The wood dries and becomes brittle, limbs can snap when a climber puts weight on them, and the trunk may be weaker than it looks. Contractors often use a lift or a crane on dead trees near houses so nobody has to climb into the canopy.

If the tree is an ash, ask the contractor to look for emerald ash borer damage, such as thin crowns, bark splits and D-shaped exit holes. Without treatment, infested ash trees are expected to die within about ten years of infestation, and Missouri is one of the states where the USDA has released parasitic wasps to fight the beetle. A dead ash near a house should not be left standing for long.

After the tree is down, decide what to do with the stump. Our stump grinding page explains the process. If you leave the stump, mark it so nobody trips or hits it with a mower.

Before you hire

What to Confirm Before a Pagedale Job Starts

We operate this website and connect you with an independent tree service. We do not inspect, approve or guarantee contractors. It is your job to confirm the contractor's insurance and any business license the city requires before work starts. Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly from the insurance company.

Get a written quote listing the trees, cleanup, hauling and stump work, and agree on when payment is due. Avoid paying the whole bill before the job is done, and be wary of anyone who knocks on your door after a storm asking for cash.

Ask how the crew plans to protect what is around the tree. On small Pagedale lots that can mean plywood over a lawn, ropes to keep limbs off a fence or a neighbor's roof, and a plan for where the chipper and truck will park. A contractor who explains the plan before starting is easier to hold to it afterward.

If a dispute comes up, the Missouri Attorney General's office takes consumer complaints, and the Federal Trade Commission publishes guidance on home repair offers. If you want an expert opinion on a tree's health, ask for someone holding the ISA Certified Arborist credential and confirm it on the International Society of Arboriculture website.

Pagedale Roads and Neighborhood Notes

St. Charles Rock Road is Pagedale's main commercial road and carries Missouri Route 180. Ferguson Avenue, once called Hoke Avenue, is another key street, and Engelholm Gardens sits near Ferguson and North Market Street.

Pagedale is part of the Normandy Schools Collaborative. The former Lincoln Elementary School was in Pagedale, and its students moved to Lucas Crossing Elementary when that school opened. Normandy High School is in neighboring Wellston.

City Hall and the police facility share a building that opened in 2001 at a cost of about $1 million, with an 8,000 square foot court space. If you need to ask about a street tree, a yard notice or whether a contractor needs a local business license, that is where to start.

The city sits close to Wellston, Pine Lawn and the north side of the City of St. Louis, so tree services working those areas usually cover Pagedale too. When you call, give a cross street and mention whether there is alley or side-yard access to the tree.

Pagedale Tree Removal Questions

When did Pagedale become a city?

Pagedale was incorporated on February 15, 1950. Its population peaked at 5,106 in 1960, and the 2020 census counted 2,554 residents.

Who handles trees along St. Charles Rock Road?

St. Charles Rock Road through Pagedale is part of Missouri Route 180, which the Missouri Department of Transportation maintains. Questions about trees in that right of way go to MoDOT. For other streets, ask Pagedale City Hall.

The city says my yard needs work. Where do I start?

Call City Hall and ask exactly what is required and by when. Then get a written quote that covers that scope. A contractor can tell you what it takes to meet it, but the city decides what counts as done.

Is a dead ash tree dangerous?

It can be. Dead wood becomes brittle, and ash killed by emerald ash borer can drop limbs or fail at the trunk. Have it looked at, and do not park or play under it in the meantime.

Can I clear a whole lot in one visit?

Many contractors can clear brush and small trees in a day, depending on the size of the lot and how much wood comes out. Large trees near houses may add time. Ask for a timeline on the callback.
